This one came out exactly how a backyard deck should - functional, solid, and good-looking enough that the family immediately filled it up with furniture and flowers. We built this 16x16 pressure treated wood deck for the Taylor family in Greenville, and the space completely changed how they use their backyard.

Here's what made this build a little more involved than a standard deck. The yard has an above-ground pool, an HVAC unit tucked under the structure, and a screened porch connection on one side. That means we had to think carefully about how everything tied together - access to the pool, clearance around the mechanical equipment, and a clean transition into the house. Getting all of that right takes planning before the first board ever goes down.

The custom handrails are one of the details we're most proud of on this one. We used black metal balusters paired with pressure treated wood posts and top rails - a combination that holds up well in the South Carolina heat and looks sharp without being overdone. Solar post cap lights were added to each corner post, which is a small detail that makes a big difference when the family is out there in the evenings. There's also a dedicated stair run down to the pool with a gated opening, so getting in and out of the water is easy and safe.

What we ended up with is a deck that works hard for this family. There's room for a full dining set, a rocking chair setup near the house, a separate lounge area closer to the pool, and still open floor space to move around. The 16x16 footprint gives them a lot of flexibility without the deck feeling oversized for the yard. That balance is something we think about on every custom deck design and build we take on.

We're grateful for customers like the Taylors who trust us with a project like this. When a family walks outside and their backyard finally matches how they want to live in it - that's the whole point.
